Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear one of my songs played in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
Bebop Beatniks have been playing jazz in Jonesboro for a long time now. Earlier this year I put together a retrospective album. I searched all of our live performances for original songs and then I selected the best of these to put on the album, "Church". I will include a link to the whole album on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
On November 1, 2016, we played a composition recital in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. I picked my song "Dragonflight" for this week's podcast. Playing on the song were Sid Davis and Chris Wilson - trumpet, Nicholas Graves - alto, Jonathan Vickers - tenor, Austin Lynn - trombone, Kyle Kempf - bass, Alex Washam - drums, and Larry Heyl - piano. All ASU students at the time and almost all of us from Northeast Arkansas.
We called ourselves the October Octet. So how did that end up on the Bebop Beatniks album?
It turns out that every musician playing, except two, played in Bebop Beatniks or were regular guests with Bebop Beatniks. The band rehearsed for the recital and the execution of the horn harmonies on this recording is excellent. Far and away the best recording I have of this song.
So, since I could include it on the album, I did.
And that's the story about how my song "Dragonflight", played by the October Octet ended up on the Bebop Beatniks album, "Church"
So now, from the new Bebop Beatniks album here's a song I wrote, "Dragonflight" recorded right here at ASU.
And that's "Dragonflight" from the new Bebop Beatniks album, "Church". Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00 to hear more Bebop Beatniks, Natalie Cressman, The Bad Plus, and the Per Husby Septett.
Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday May 27 I will be livestreaming chill jazz piano from Beatles Park in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas. Right down the road from my daughters' book store, Eclectic Geekery.
If you can't make it to Beatles Park you can watch the stream at my Youtube channel.

Inspired Unreality, now on a twice a month schedule, will be held at 11:00 AM Central, on Saturday, October 1. Since it's the first Saturday of the month our topic will be fantasy and science fiction.
It's a big topic and one we love to talk about. If you're into novels, short stories, movies, television series, or games, if it's fantasy and science fiction it's on topic. Let us know what you think about the new stuff or the old stuff. For more info and a link go here.
I write super shorts. The thing I like about super shorts is that you can finish a story in one sitting. Here's one of my favorites.
Hegel, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein
by Larry Heyl
It was my brother Jeff who was the doer. Always making things, working on this or that, good at math and physics in school.
I was the thinker. Always gazing off into the distance pondering the big questions. What is life? What is death? What is man? What is woman?
It’s that last one that really puzzled me. Jeff got married, started his own business, got rich. I got tongue tied around girls, took a philosophy degree, and had an income commensurate with my degree. I check the want ads daily. Never have I seen Philosopher Needed - Top Dollar.
So I never understood why the aliens abducted me. It was Jeff they wanted. They must have got their wires crossed.
Now I’m not gay but I didn’t mind the anal probe so much. Learning the alien language wasn’t too bad either. They put a silver disc on my forehead and I started talking to them. It was the interview that really got them.
They kept asking about stuff I didn’t know, technology, armaments, rocket ships, manufacturing. I wasn’t much help. But I gave them a good dose of Hegel, Nietzsche, and Wittgenstein. I don’t think they were ready for that. They started babbling. They sent me up the ladder. I kept expounding and their confusion deepened. Evidently philosophy wasn’t their strong suit. Like I said they got the wrong guy.
They could only deal with me for so long. Before I knew it they had beamed me back home and departed Earth post haste. And that’s how I saved the world with philosophy.

01. DJ Hairy Larry presents NJHB playing "Catamaran"
02. Something Blue - Streak - 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we're hearing one of my jazz pieces recorded live at the Craighead Forest Bandshell.
NJHB is a different kind of jazz band without established personnel or repertoire. As usual when we played at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 2, 2013, it was the first and only time we played with this group of musicians.
So for this show we had Matt Jackson - bass, Mike "Zif" Lovell - guitar, Suzanne Michell - vocals, drums, and percussion, Carl Holden - guitar, Jay Shepherd - guitar, "Shugga" Shane Chastain - Roland Fantom, Addison Boling - drums, and Hairy Larry - Fender Rhodes, vocals, percussion, and dancing.
We are all from the Jonesboro Area except Suzanne is from Little Rock and Matt Jackson is from Kennett, Missouri.
We had an hour set so we got to play three songs. We tend to play long arrangements. The recording of "Catamaran" was close to 20 minutes long. On the album it's 12 minutes. So I made a radio edit that's 7 minutes long to play for you today. There's a link to the whole concert at sbblues.com.
In the process of doing the radio edit I did a lot of active listening. So I'm going to share some of the things I noticed about this recording.
Suzanne Michell is one of the best scat singers I have ever heard. There are places in the song where Suzanne and I are both scatting and Jay Shepherd joins the conversation on his guitar. Both Matt Jackson on bass and Addison Boling on drums play excellent solos.
There's no horns but we have three guitars and two keyboards. This can be a recipe for disaster but everyone listened while they played making space for the other musicians.
So now, recorded at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 2, 2013, here's NJHB playing my song, "Catamaran".
And that's NJHB playing "Catamaran" at the Craighead Forest Bandshell on June 2, 2013. Don't miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, for more NJHB, Charlie Hunter, and Steve Lawson.

Delta Boogie Newsletter - August 2022 - Guerilla Livestreaming Craighead Forest Park
My grandson, Conley, joined me at Craighead Forest Park on July 13, 2022, to Guerilla Livestream Craighead Forest Lake. We played behind the bandshell with the lake behind us. We didn't get any ducks or geese swimming behind us but you can here them on the recording.
The Story Of Mister Mistmeister And His Many Transformations
Starting last February Ari and Caper have been adventuring in Tobbins Shire, west of Milyagon, through Wilken Woods, and across the river. We've been campaigning once or twice a month, sometimes with more PCs, and in July we finished a story arc.
I turned all of the session summaries into a booklet that can be downloaded here.
My daughters, Sarah and Megan, have opened a books, games, and hobby store in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas, and the last three sessions were played at their store.
So it's been a good month for us in spite of the heat wave. I hope you've been staying cool and staying busy. Please let me know about your projects, music, and art.
Hairy Larry Guerilla Livestreaming The Big Pines was recorded live. Hairy Larry's current schedule is Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday at 2:00 PM Central with weekend live performances to be arranged.

01. DJ Hairy Larry Presents John Shepherd
02. Something Blue - Ladybugs - 29 second spot
Thanks Marty, today we're going to hear John Shepherd joining me livestreaming on Twitch.
I am featuring jazz guitarists on Something Blue this week so I thought I would talk about playing jazz with John Shepherd on the Twitch Porch.
John and I go back to the early nineties. He was a Blues Fest regular always headlining for us. One thing about Blues Fest that isn't true about most festivals is we always stayed on time. The trick to that is telling the bands when their time is up. But I always gave John Shepherd the headline performance so he could play as long as he wanted.
I got to play with John a few times at Blues Fest. And then we started a band together with Jeremy Burnett on harp. We called the band Delta Legends and besides playing in Northeast Arkansas we played on the Cedell Davis stage at the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena every year.
We even got to record with Matt Lucas one time at HairyLarryLand when Matt and Barbara came to visit with Vivian and myself.
And then the pandemic happened and since we're old Vivian and I went into lockdown and that shut down my live performances.
My daughter Megan started gaming on Twitch and I had to keep up so I started my own Twitch channel where I would play chill jazz piano. I wrote the songs and then I wrote horn parts and then I turned our front porch into the Twitch Porch and started playing again, outdoors, with Bebop Beatniks and Jazz Buskers.
On April 10, 2022, John Shepherd joined me on the Twitch Porch and we played four of my jazz originals. The videos are on Youtube, I'll include links on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com. John and I had a great time so I thought I would play an extended blues with a nice slow groove for you today.
Ok now, here's John Shepherd joining me on the Twitch Porch on April 10, 2022, playing a real belly rubber, "Low Earth Orbit".
All right now, that's John Shepherd and Hairy Larry playing "Low Earth Orbit" on my twitch stream. Go to the Something Blue website at sbblues.com for links. Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a song I wrote, recorded at New Jazz In Jonesboro.
In 2013 we scheduled New Jazz In Jonesboro once a month at TheArts@311. We often played charts that had never seen a music stand before and although we were reading charts we leaned heavily into group improvisation and free jazz.
On July 6, 2013, we recorded the songs that would become the “Cookin’ For Piper” album. Matt Jackson wrote “Cookin’ For Piper”. Joseph Curtis wrote “Working, P.M.”. And I put “Monkey Walk” up, for the first time.
Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a jazz standard played In The Loft at The Edge.
The Common Time Quartet played some cooking jazz and blues. I was happy to book them on a double bill at The Edge Coffeehouse featuring The Common Time Quartet and Bebop Beatniks.
Unfortunately their sax player, Josh Carter, couldn’t make the gig. Fortunately they got Tyler Remagen to sub. So they delivered a little bit different sound with Tyler on tenor instead of Josh’s scorching alto sax.
Playing the gig were Alex Ditto, guitar; Spencer Rawlins, bass; Chris Issom, drums; and Tyler Remagen, tenor sax, all ASU students in the jazz program at the time and all of them from Northeast Arkansas.
All of these musicians helped me with my composition recitals and at one time or another played with Bebop Beatniks. Tyler Remagen played tenor sax in Bebop Beatniks for years and is featured on both of the albums.
So now, recorded In The Loft at The Edge on May 6, 2017, here’s The Common Time Quartet playing the jazz standard, “All Of Me”.
And that’s The Common Time Quartet playing “All Of Me” In The Loft at The Edge on May 6, 2017. Don’t miss Something Blue, Saturday night at 10:00, for more great jazz from Common Time, Garage A Trois, and Charlie Hunter.

Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear one of my songs played in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
Bebop Beatniks have been playing jazz in Jonesboro for a long time now. Earlier this year I put together a retrospective album. I searched all of our live performances for original songs and then I selected the best of these to put on the album, “Church”. I will include a link to the whole album on the Something Blue website at sbblues.com.
On November 1, 2016, we played a composition recital in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. I picked my song “Dragonflight” for this week’s podcast. Playing on the song were Sid Davis and Chris Wilson - trumpet, Nicholas Graves - alto, Jonathan Vickers - tenor, Austin Lynn - trombone, Kyle Kempf - bass, Alex Washam - drums, and Larry Heyl - piano. Thanks Marty, today we’re going to hear a brand new blues rock song recorded in Wynne, Arkansas.
Mr. John B. Shepherd is famous for his live blues guitar shows. I like to say, “I ain’t saying John Shepherd is better than anyone else, but there sure ain’t nobody else that plays better than him.”
John also has a studio in his basement in Wynne, Arkansas. John calls it StudioJS. We recorded some of the tracks there for our Delta Legends album, “Two Woman Blues”.
Well, this winter John got to work down in his studio and recorded a new album, “Guitar Soul”, that we are planning to release on HairyLarryLand. And from that album we’ll be hearing a pre-release version of “One Eyed Jack”. Our friend, Michael Riley, played drums on the album but on this song John used Zoom drums built into his multitrack recorder.

All ASU students at the time and almost all of us from Northeast Arkansas.
